Student Worksheets

Here’s my wonder for the day: is the term worksheet back in vogue? Several years ago, if my memory serves me correctly, this term was out of vogue with both teachers and administrators. A student skill sheet or practice page might be fine—but you’d better not be using worksheets! What’s the skinny on worksheets in education today? I’ve always believed worksheets (skill sheets, practice pages) to be important tools in a teacher’s toolbox. What do you think? And, by the way, what do you call these pages today? 🙂

Curious as ever!

  1. I have always used “worksheets” daily in my JK/SK classroom. The kids love them! One day, I decided to let them have a break from the worksheets and they begged for me to let them see the day’s “work”.
I have a variety of theme based worksheets geared to each individual level in math , language, science, etc. The children look forward to coming to school the next day, afraid that they might miss something!

  2. I teach Pre-K(4’s) but have also used them in Preschool (3’s)I call them fun sheets, and my kids and parents love them. It’s something they can take home and share with mom and dad. It makes them feel as important as older siblings. They can practice coloring, cutting and pasting not just cognitive skills.

  3. About 95% of my classroom activities are hands-on/center/learning activities, but I do explain to my students that when they get to kindergarten, they will have lots of paper assignments to do. (The kinder teachers at my school are big on worksheets.) I realize that I need to introduce them to worksheets now so that they won’t be surprised by them next year.
