The Handwriting Debate

Do you remember when you were young and couldn’t read cursive writing? I have a distinct memory of being with older friends, viewing someone’s handwriting, and saying, “I can’t read cursive yet.” Cursive was a secret language and I was so excited to learn it in third grade!

Currently 21 states require that students learn cursive in schools. The most recent—California—made teaching cursive a law late last year. Check out this article from Education Week about the resurgence of cursive.

I’m torn because schools truly have enough to teach without adding something else. But also, handwriting is a part of a person’s identity, and we might be shortchanging children without its instruction. From an academic standpoint, learning cursive makes connections in our brains that keyboarding never will.
