Sticky-Dot Giveaway

I’ve been second-guessing myself. My original title for this blog post was “Sticky Giveaway!” Then I began to ponder the appeal of a sticky giveaway. Would readers think it was an ooey-gooey giveaway or a giveaway that required some bribing of the blog host? 🙂 Neither is true! This giveaway is all about sticky dots!

Specifically—how do you use this versatile supply in your classroom?

And the giveaway? I have two packs of colorful sticky dots. I’d like to send a pack, along with a book from The Mailbox, to each of two lucky winners. To enter, post your sticky-dot comment on this blog before midnight EDT, Tuesday, July 31.

Stuck on you!
Diane

Congratulations to Ellen and Julie! They’re the winners of our giveaway!

  1. Hello. I am a middle school math teacher. I use sticky dots to facilitate differentiation in my classroom. I stick the dots on index cards to indicate which group students will work with while doing “stations.” For example, yellow dots work with me first (homework check & reteaching). Red dots do related practice or enrichment with a partner on a computer. Blue dots work independently on an extension/enrichment activity. Green dots do an assessment — a “Show What You Know” (5 problems)or Exit Pass.

  2. We use sticky dots to create pattern caterpillars. They are so cute! After putting the stickers in a pattern (this is the body) , the children use markers to add legs, eyes and antennas. Other details include a sun, clouds and grass.

  3. I use them to keep track of cards for my learningstations. They are especially handy if there are more than one set of the same cards-just put the colored dots on to organize, all cards with the same color go in the same bag.

  4. I LOVE sticky dots to identify different levels of books, games and stations in my classroom. I attach them to the corner of each item and the kids know which colors are the “go to color” for their level of learning.

  5. I use sticky dots all day in my second grade classroom! In math, we use sticky dots with 10 frames to build number sense and build numbers. We use them in language arts to cover letters to find proper affixes, contractions, etc. Sticky dots are extremely versatile!

  6. I use them to make number flashcards, to make ten frames, on my reward charts and memory games! The kids love playing with the stickers! 🙂

  7. I would love to win some more dots to use in my classroom. These colors look great too! I use sticky dots for lots of things in my room-numbering things, coding book levels, etc.

    Thanks!

  8. after reading Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews, we make our own class book by each creating our own page with ten dots

  9. I work with toddlers and preschoolers and we use sticky dots for art and math. They love to peel and stick them to paper and count the dots and match them to the number.

  10. I use sticky dots for lots of things especially countiung activities. But I think the most creative way I use them is on Wild Thing Day.

With my 4 year class we do a week on the book Where the Wild Things Are. On Friday we have PJ day and each Child brings in a pair of socks. The Children decorate the socks with markers and other things and the sticky dots become the toe nails. They put the socks on over the PJs and use the mask they made earlier in the week. And then we let the Wild Rumpus begin and dance.
Always fun and I have found sticky dots are perfect for the toe nails of the Wild Things.

  11. I talked to a fellow teacher today who uses different colors to allow students to show different stages of writing within their journals. Ex: blue-prewriting and red published. I could also use these in my library to level books or to keep learning center items together. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  12. I use them for so many things…I love sticky dots!! I make gameboards with them, use them to fill in a reward paper gumball machine, label books, game pieces, containers, etc. My most special use for them has been to label on a wall-sized map of the world all the places our Mystery Classes from Journey North have turned out to be over the last five years of our participation in this outstanding activity. Every year, my students are so fascinated by this map record. If you are not aware of Mystery Classes, please check it out. It is such a fantastic program and Journey North has such a variety of great projects to get involved with. 🙂

  13. I love sticky dots and use them for practically everything: my calender, weather station, cubbies, folders, name tag for marking centers. I use a cookie cut out (brown circle) for my rewards, the kids put choc chips on the cookies with sticky dots. We use them for 3 D puzzle of pizzas and fruits to help hold the pieces together while they finish. I use sticky dots to hold folder and envelope centers on the sides of my bookshelves it make the easy to acess and I can easily change them out when I change themes or centers. I also use them to hang posters on the wall so I can easily change them as we progress thru the year.

  14. I use them to label books, to group students, and for students to answer data questions for graphing practice.

  15. I’ve never used these before … but I can see some possibilities for them. Books could be grouped by genre or by reading level, students could use them to make arrays when learning multiplication, or divide them into groups for division. These could also be put on students’ reward charts.

  16. One more purpose for sticky dots is for cleaning purposes. You can stick different colors on toy bins from different areas in your classroom. On green day you pull the green bin toys to clean. Each day a different color and that way your areas still have ample toys for the children to play with.

  17. I use sticky dots when my 2 and 3 year olds are learning to make a pattern. Also making flowers of different shades. They love the part of peeling and calling out the color. This is also a great times to keep the conversation going. A excellent time of sharing and working together. Love the “DOTS” I will make it a “DOT” day in which everyone comes in wearing something with “DOTS” including myself. Its so much fun and great stories.

  18. Sticky Dots play an important role in our classroom. We use them to group students, so their writing, math and science journals coordinate with their small group colors. We use them to label our leveled readers. We use sticky dots for lots of math activities such as problem solving, base ten/number and graphing.

  19. I have my students “transform” the dot into something else! Sometimes we’ll do a writing project along with that.

  20. I use sticky dots in my classroom for graphing activities so we can distinguish the student’s response to the graphing question and analyze the data collected.

I also use black sticky dots after we read Ten Black Dots. My students select some sticky dots to create a picture and then they write a short sentence. Example:

I can make a balloon with one black dot.

I also use sticky dots for our bus tags so that we can distinguish which student takes which bus. Eash student has a colored sticky dot on his/her bus tag. orange dots ride the _______ bus
red dots ride the ________ bus

It makes it so much easier when we are lining up the kindergarten students

  21. wow! never realized how many ways you could use sticky dots – organizing, sorting, crafting — I also use them on my 4 years – we break up into different groups and go to different areas in the room we use the dots to help us know where we are supposed to be!

  22. We use sticky dots for:
    1. map activities: to mark cities on blank maps as we discuss each one.

    2. when all three kdgs. get together for special occasions: 100’s day, Thanksgiving, etc. we have special stations they rotate through in the different classrooms. We divide each of our classes into three groups and color code each group by having the children wear the dot of the appropriate color so they will know which group to go to.

    3. to teach the children where to begin writing (from top left) we put a sticky dot with a smiley face in the upper lefthand corner. we do this especially at the very beginning of the year.

  23. I LOOOOOVE Sticky Dots! I use them in my preschool classroom for dozens of activities! Math/Number center: for creating and extending patterns, counting and graphing. Also great for fine motor, making games like memory match, color recognition, Bingo games, etc. I putthem in my writing center and the children love to use them to make their own postage “stamps” and stickers. I also program them with alphabet letters so the kids can identify upper and lower case in a matching game, pickout the letters in ther name etc. We keep them in the art center as well for making caterpillars and other sticky dot critters.
Sticky dots a always on my “Wishlist” for parents at the beginning of the school year!

  24. I love using sticky dots for organizing things and color coding. It’s also really nice to have them always handy for when you need a quick visual. I’m definitely going to be using them in my brand-new classroom this year!!

  25. I use the sticky dots for several things, but the students’ favorite use is to pretend they are M&Ms candies. They color a paper plate to look like a cookie, then they pull a number card out of a bag. They must identify the number, then count out that number of M&Ms (sticky dots), and put them on top of the cookie. It’s a fun activity that combines art, number identification, and counting. 🙂

  26. I use sticky dots for several different activities. One in particular is for math assessment at the end of the school year. When my Preschoolers are getting ready to be Kindergarteners, I give them a chart that has the numbers 1-10 listed. Then I have them put the correct number of sticky dots to the correct number. Then I evaluate it to make sure they understand the numbers 1-10.
