Check out the news article below from The Associated Press. Do you think this is an educationally sound solution? Would you be in favor of a solution such as this one if you had extra days to make up at the end of the school year?

Ever curious!

LANSING, Michigan — Michigan schools with too many snow days may avoid having to schedule extra days in June. But students still may not be happy with the remedy. The House gave final approval Tuesday to a bill that would let schools schedule longer days. It passed, 106-1, and now goes to Gov. Rick Snyder.

Supporters say the change is needed because some schools in northern Michigan had more than the maximum six snow days. The minimum requirement of 170 school days would be waived, but schools still would need at least 1,098 hours of instruction this year.

  1. why not just start the school year earlier. 1st of August or…
Longer school days will hurt day-cares lost money, children are all ready tired. Children are no longer required to work n the farms change with the needs

  2. I teach in Michigan and the state made it a requirement that schools could not start until after Labor day.

The U.P of Michigan gets a lot fo snow and the population is more scattered than here in the lower. They have to do what they can to get the hours in whether it be additional days or additional hours added,

  3. I understand wanting to squeeze in the instruction hours but I think extending the school day would be more of an inconvenience to the parents. Most families can barely keep up with the delayed starts and half days, never mind the “X” amount of extended days.

I think the days should just be added on to the end of the year…most kids do not adapt well to changes in daily schedules.

  4. Wow — with that many hours to make up, I’d rather have days added to the end of the year.

I’ve heard of some school districts making students go to school on Saturdays to help make up some of the days.

We start in August here in South Texas. If we have make-up days, they are because of hurricanes.

  5. I think there is a clear problem to both. Extra days mean that students will shut down, and teaching them will be a half hearted effort by teaching faculty. Longer days, means students who are more stressed, and teachers who will have to put in extremely long hours to plan for the extra time.

There’s no good solution to a clear problem. Start the school year earlier, second or third week of August, and plan for at least 8 snow/hurricane/mud inclement weather days, to be made up in that time.

Clear solution: Set a precedent, don’t put yourself in a position to have to react to a situation with no good solution.

  6. Longer days is not a good solution. Students are tired and they need a break from school work. After 7 hours of school, my students need to go home and be with their families.
I would find a way to engage my students if I had no choice but to teach for another hour each day. Some physical activity and outside time would be necessary to help us all re-energize.
