Same Old Lang Syne

wreathartEvery year I wait breathlessly to hear my favorite Christmas/winter song on the radio–Dan Fogelberg’s “Same Old Lang Syne.” Golly, I love that song. It’s so pretty and relatable and slightly melancholy. Now I realize in the age of the Internet that I can listen to this song whenever the urge strikes me, but it seems to mean more when I can catch it on the radio. (Silly, yes?) After listening to the Christmas station for a couple of weeks, I figured it just wasn’t going to happen. Then I went to Jazzercize. I have a good friend that teaches Jazzercize and unbeknownst to me, she had choreographed a stretching routine to “Same Old Lang Syne.” So before the song came on, she informed me that this routine was my Christmas present. I cried like a ninny through the whole thing, partly because it was very sweet and partly because the song really is a bit sad.

Since then I have actually managed to hear the song once on the Christmas station. Do you have a favorite Christmas song? What holiday songs do your students enjoy? And is there a holiday song that makes you want to strangle someone with a string of holiday lights?

All the best!

Kim

PS Dan Fogelberg died December 16, 2007. RIP, Dan.

  1. Oh my goodness I love The hippo song. This year I taught my kiddos the long version of We wish you a Merry Christmas with the clapping, jumping and all that. When I was on Facebook and saw a video of one of my sets of twins doing it and they had taught their little sister. They were singing it for their Grandparents. I cried.
Then of course we did I’m a Dancing Christmas Tree. That was stuck in my head all of December.
