Role Models

Several years ago, the debate about who made for a good role model was blowing up pretty big in the media. Professional athletes and pop music superstars seemed to be the individuals of choice for young people back then. Maybe they still are today. I try to get an idea about it from my own children, but they’re not all that forthcoming with suggestions.

My outlook on life was formed in large part thanks to two of the bigger figures in modern philosophy, Bugs Bunny and Bullwinkle J. Moose. They were key role models during my early childhood development and their words of wisdom echo in my cerebral cortex to this day. In fact, one of Bugs Bunny’s lines is practically my motto, “Never take life too seriously. You won’t get out of it alive.” And Bullwinkle? Well, that moose’s indomitable spirit was all I needed for inspiration.

Who are the people your students look to as role models? And who are your role models, besides The Mailbox editors and bloggers?
