Rock Your Smile!

Yes, it’s National Children’s Dental Health Month! And, from your comments, I can tell that many of you are spotlighting oral care in your classrooms. I actually went to the dentist last week for a routine checkup. I’m happy to report that I skipped out of my dentist’s office with a brand-new toothbrush, brand-new floss, a spiffy tube of ChapStick lip balm, and a promise to return in six months for another checkup. No return visit needed for now. Yippee for me! (And for my pocketbook!)

Do you think most of your students have seen a dentist in the last year? How do you encourage good oral health?

Smiles,
Diane

  1. Hi Diane,
We had the Tooth Fairy visit us!! She was beautiful in her pink gown. He white wings were so sparkly! She, of course, is the size of a regular person during the day, how would she drive a car to get to our school??? We kids, were thrilled to sit and listen to her as she explained the good food and nasty food for your teeth. She had a tooth shaped purse that held all the tools you would see at the dentist, including Mr. Suckie!!

The above was written with the help of our four year olds at Northwood Preschool. they were so happy to visit with the “tooth fairy”.

The day after the visit, we had giant cut out teeth with a smiley face on one size and a frown face on the other. The students loved cutting out food from magazines and glueing them onto the giant teeth!

    Hope this inspires others!

    thanks

    Rene

  2. Today a dental hygientist (one of the Moms) came in and did a presentation. Earlier this year a dental office came in as well. We made beautiful smiles today I made a smiling mouth and the kids cut out 20 teeth and glued them on. They are very cute and the counting practice was great.

I also enjoy having the kids paint teeth cut from manila paper with a toothbrush in white paint.

  3. Hi, Diane –

Your dentist gives you Chap Stick?! Mine doesn’t! Wish he did. 😉

We are covering dental health next week.

Each year, we have a dental health van come to our school to check the students’ teeth. We really appreciate it. It’s such a great service.

  4. A great craft idea: Fold a paper plate in half, use mini marshmallows as teeth and glue them inside the paper plate – top and bottom teeth. You can add a tongue from construction paper. We even used this to write our thank you on for the dentist office that visits us.
