Pumpkin-Themed Process Art!

Here’s a fun process art project that’s just perfect for the season! I use a foam pumpkinphotobrayer to roll brown paint on white paper (or you could just use brown paper to begin with). Then I make green prints (baby pumpkins) with a golf tee and orange prints (big pumpkins) with a cork. I drag a string through green paint and place it on the paper. Then I remove it so it makes a print that  resembles a vine. Repeat to add more vines.

I am never happier than when I’m splattering paint and flinging glue. That’s why I try to tuck in lots of process art when I’m planning issues of The Mailbox magazine. I also put a variety of crafts in the magazine—projects that help youngsters work on fine-motor skills and that create familiar-looking products (like a pumpkin cutout with glued-on shape cutouts). So here are my questions: Do you use more process art or more crafts in your classroom, or do you use both? Do you have strong feelings about crafts? Do crafts have a place in an early childhood curriculum?

  1. I love process art! I provide the materials, and the children can create whatever they want. I think that the results are a more accurate depiction of a child’s abilities and way of thinking than any arts and crafts project could be. The children also feel that the projects are really theirs and not just a representation of how they can follow a teacher’s instructions. The children in my class now remind each other that “You can do it how ever you want. It’s your picture.” Now that is an important concept for them to learn.

  2. I love both process art and arts and crafts projects. With arts and crafts I can work on specfic skills of my choice. Wedo the arts and crafts during work time
But I also like the children to be able to create so during free time I place what we call the art basket on one table. We rotate art supplies in it but it consists of paint, paper, brushes, scissors markers, glue and odds and ends. The children can chose to use whatever they like in whatever way they choose. Its become a very popular place
