New Year Ideas

Wait a sec! Please don’t hit delete—I really am trying to be helpful. 🙂 Even though you’re most likely in the throws of holiday projects and all, there’s a good chance you’re also contemplating or planning lessons for 2012. So what’s up your teacher’s sleeve? Will you be introducing a new theme or skill? Or perhaps you have a favorite back-to-school-in-the-new-year tip or an idea to share with your teacher colleagues.

All ears!

  1. I have introduced fun Fridays this year and plan to continue them through the rest of the winter.
One thing I want to do is a Mad Science Day with lots of hands on science for the kids to do. i think it will be a lot of Fun.

  2. I have a new co-worker who has really lit a fire in me to challenge my 2’s to bigger projects all year long. We will do a nursery rhyme unit come January, but in the mean time we are watching our Amaryllus(sp) grow and completing Christmas/winter projects.

  3. I’m planning to add a new classroom job next semester. The Book Helper’s job will be to make sure that all returned classroom books are placed in the correct basket for future check-outs.

  4. I teach 4 & 5 year olds. We begin our January with a special Christmas show-and-tell day. Each child brings one special thing they received for Christmas to show the class. We also make a list of “resolutions” of sorts. We each pick one thing we want to learn or get better at before the school year ends. We post the list on the wall and the children get to cross it off the list when they feel they have accomplished their goal. It’s a great way to ease back into the swing of things after a long break.

  5. We use the clip system for behavior management. In January students who end the day on pink (highest color) will receive a press-on jewel. After 5 jewels, students will receive a new clothespin.

  6. Thanks to those that shared! I got an idea or was reinforced with positive vibes from each of you. The only additional thing that I’ll include is that each of our students have lockers, so we’ll make a locker “jacket” that will include artwork for the month, important dates to remember, and individual student images.
