  1. I love Kevin Henkes and use several of his books in my kindergarten class – Chrysanthemum and Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse are just 2 of my favorites. Little White Rabbit looks awesome and if I don’t win it, I’m sure it will be a purchase before school starts in August!

  2. My students have enjoyed Kevin Henkes books. Several years ago our librarian introduced my Kindergarten class to Kevin Henkes. Since then, I have been reading his stories to my classes. It is fun to see students look for his books in the library and check them out to try to read on their own.

  3. Little White Rabbit sounds like a special story and I likes the Teacher’s guide. I try to read to my special needs students everyday and we talk about the stories we read. One discussion we have is about what is real and what is pretend. My MOCD students often have trouble with that concept because so much of what they see on television makes fantasy seem possible. I would love to have a copy for my classroom.

  4. The Penguin Young Readers program looks exciting. I am a kindergarten teacher and I think my students would love any of the titles in the 1st and 2nd levels. These kids get so excited when they can read a book to themselves instead of having someone read it to them. Sadly, I don’t have enough of these simple stories for them. Hopefully I’ll be able to buy some of these stories this summer in preparation for next year.

  5. I think the Weird School series would be a great asset to any classroom library. It would really appeal to the middle grade students and those who don’t really like to read. the weird titles really pull the readers into the stories and the blurbs on the back of the books might entice reluctant readers to take a chance on reading the book. If they can be persuaded to read one, there is a good chance they will pick up another- just to find out what happens to the wacky characters. I also think the students in grades 2 – 4, who are probably the target audience, will like the fact that the stories revolve around everyday school life and the people they have contact with, something they are very familiar with. The Weird Book Club is another thing that might be used to get the students to write and read more.

  6. They all look good and I can use them with the different ages. I will also use the teaching guide. We alreaady have some of the books and will have to get the other boooks. Susan

By mid-year most First graders are reading independently
so these books would be more than appreciated! We also
do AR tests, which are comprehension tests on books the kids read alone or with someone else. I’m sure his book will be added to this list! I also think the Penguin Young Readers’ program looks intriguing. Thanks for these offerings!
