Morning Person or Night Person?

mabrymillThis past weekend, I got up at the crack of dawn to go to Mabry Mill along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. It’s a lovely old mill with a restaurant that makes a great southern breakfast. (The sweet potato pancakes are to die for.) But I am not a morning person—not even for sweet potato pancakes. I grudgingly got out of bed at 6:00 am and slapped on a hat and a fleece jacket. The only reason I’m smiling in this picture is because I’m drinking a big ol’ soda. (I’m not a real grownup, and I only like coffee if it involves the word mocha and is covered in whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Let’s face it—that’s dessert, not coffee. But I digress…)

I am a night person. And I feel that night people are at a disadvantage in life since work, for most of us, begins in the morning. Are you a night person or a morning person? What do you do to get revved up in the morning to greet your classroom full of energetic youngsters?

  1. I am a morning person, but as I get older, it takes coffee to really get me going well. I usually start thinking about my students and how I can engage and excite them in learning as I am getting ready. I also listen to peppy music on the way to school. I particularly like “Good Morning” by Mandisa.

  2. I am not usually a morning person, but I find that if I get to work a couple of hours before the students arrive, I have time to work up enthusiasm for my day. I also get exceedingly organized that way. I have found that I enjoy mornings more and more the longer I get up early and go in early. It also allows me to go home at the end of the day instead of working long into the evening.

  3. I’m a morning person. I love the quiet of the morning. I usually get to school a half hour to 45 minutes before anyone else. No distractions no line at the copy machine. I’m usually in bed by 9:00. Now my husband is the opposite, late sleeper, and goes to bed late.

  4. Love morniings. I drink my tea and go to work early. By time the kiddos come I am wde awake and smiling. I am in bed at 10.

  5. When I discovered 25 years ago that I had nothing to say to the parents and children who came to my preschool bright eyed and bushy tailed I decided I better have that delicious cup of coffee. Now I enjoy sipping on my coffee and listening to worship music talking to the Lord about the day ahead and blessing my students mentally before I go to school and greet the parents and students! It works!!

  6. Definitely a morning person. Our school day begins at 7:30 a.m., and I start my drive to work at 6:20 a.m. — which means I need to wake up at 5:30 a.m.

I am often criticized by co-workers for being too cheery at the beginning of the day! 😉
