Monthly Happenings

I have a burning question for y’all this morning! I’d like to know what kinds of monthly ideas you use the most in your classroom. For example, do you mostly use literature to spotlight monthly events and themes? Or do you mostly use arts-and-crafts projects or center activities to spotlight monthly themes? Or maybe you bring monthly themes into your classroom through student skill sheets, writing prompts, or even partner games!

Hmmmm, where did that question go? Here it is!

What kinds of monthly ideas do you use most in your classroom?

Have a happy day!
Diane

PS Please include the grade you teach too!

  1. I use it all! Each child is unique so I try every avenue to help them learn the theme for the month.

3-5 year olds mostly but I teach Two 1/2 year olds and Kindergarten.

  2. I also use all avenues to bring in my monthly or weekly themes. I teach 3-5 year olds in an Early Childhood EEN/4K classroom and use all modalities to make sure I have tapped everyones learning strengths.

  3. I do all of it too – we have a theme for the week – teach and have fun with that through books, centers , crafts – and try to incorporate them all –sometimes it isn’t spot on but you get the idea at least – its strengthening skills and knowledge in all areas! And kids all learn in different ways so you hit on all those in anyway you can! I teach prek! thanks!

  4. I teach 3 and 4 year olds and I incorporate my weekly theme into all areas of the classroom. I think I am able to hit all the kids needs my doing that. I typically use a weekly theme but this month its health your body, 5 senses etc. I do cluster my themes so that I am not changing the centers all the time.

  5. I teach 3 to 5 year olds. I too do a weekly theme. Our themes for the month are changes in weather/ taking notice to the colors. Then we go into fall leaves. Love to do crafts with leaves!!! Then of course turkey crafts! And last but not least, I like to go into a family theme. This theme is pretty much done on a daily basis. Each day is a different theme. For example, one day is What makes our family special? There will be family arts and crafts, where I get the family themselves involved. Then we do what are some things we are thankful for. It’s amazing the responses you get from little ones. Then we go into sharing and caring for others. It’s a fun week!! But all through the month, lots of arts and crafts and lots of books!

  6. I use a lot of each of these things, but especially literature and discovery lessons (ie. real artifacts, or fascimiles there of).

  7. I teach Ga. Pre-K (4year olds) and we use weekly themes to shape how we present skills. Each center is changed and materials added to supplement the theme. We read tons of books about our themes, but also read a non-related variety, as well. We do a few crafts, but usually, I present some examples and provide materials and let the kids come up with their own art.

  8. I, like many others on here, have themes in my pre-k classroom. I would love to have some theme writing prompts or game ideas.

    Thank you! 🙂

  9. I’m the same – I like to incorporate my weekly theme into all of our preschool activities for the day. I also cluster my themes as much as possible so we have a natural transition. For instance, later this month we will do a unit on our families, then move onto kindness, then giving, and finally Christmas. I feel it’s very important to incorporate the theme into all of our activities as much as possible – it keeps the concepts that we do repeat fresh, and it really engages each of my students, no matter what type of learners they are.
