Making Friends

Here’s a friendly reminder for ya! This Sunday, August 5, is Friendship Day. Since 1935, this thoughtful holiday has been recognized annually on the first Sunday in August. I’ll be honest; I’ve never officially celebrated Friendship Day; however, this could be the start of something new for me!

When I merge friendship with the month of August, my mind leaps to the first few days of the school year. This is the time when teachers and students reconnect with friends and form new friendships. What tips do you have for helping new teachers and new students make new friends at the start of the school year?

Eager to hear,
Diane

  1. One good way to assure some friendships starting is to meet your class in a local park in August. Have families bring their own lunch and I provide cookies. It is a great way to get to know the Parents and the kids before school starts.
I have found it starts everything off in a good way in September. Prek Children when playing tend to let other children play with them. Soon they all know someone else.

It also helps me I really miss the kids by August.

  2. I haven’t ever celebrated “friendship day” with my twos, but just getting the “first-timer’s” comfortable in this new environment is a challenge. I change my tactics every year…either by the books I choose for reading to them, or first art projects, it’s all about setting the stage for what we want to accomplish through the year.
