I’m curious, what does the lost and found at your school look like? Is there any type of organization to it? Or does it more closely resemble something you might find in a teen’s bedroom?
I dreaded walking past (let alone rummaging through) my school’s lost and found. I guess that’s why, during a recent school visit, I was intrigued by the purpose of a hallway garment rack. Sure enough, it’s the school’s lost and found for hangable items. And judging by the contents of the rack, the system seems to be working.

At both schools I’ve worked at, the lost and found was always the stage. When the students would go to the cafeteria for lunch, they’d pass the stage — and find their missing coats, jackets, backpacks, etc. The hallway garment rack is a good idea.

We used to do this, but now everything is just thrown into a room beside the stage in the cafeteria. =(
We have shelves in the hall way where our lost and found items are placed. When the grade 4/5 class were working on writing descriptive passage they photographed different items, discriped them in a poster that was posted through out the school.
There is a small open closet just outside my classroom door. Lost garments are on hangers, other items in bins. Gracious, there are some nice things in that closet! I take my kinders through it occasionally to claim their lost goodies.
Organize items by color! So much easier for everyone. And annouce to everyone to put the child’s name in items. We put it in our school newsletter and on our morning announcements. So much easier to return items than have kids come look.
