Little Known Perk

I’m sure it’s June where you are. Yep, it’s June here too…sort of. Outside the office it’s June for sure, but inside the office we’re knee-deep in pumpkins and turkeys as we work on the October/November issues of the magazines. Right now I’m actually munching on candy corn. Seriously! A couple of weeks ago I purchased a bag of the sweet stuff to test a math idea. The leftover candies were just returned to me so, naturally, I dug right in. This is one of the little known perks of being an editor with The Mailbox. If an editor suggests a teacher use candy corn to complete a project, the project is tested with candy corn. And before a recipe is published, the recipe is made in our kitchen and tasted by one, two, three, or more editors! It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it!

Many, many, many years ago we didn’t always test recipes. That procedure came to a screeching halt due to some extra salt—six teaspoons too much, to be exact! Yipes! Now we test everything we publish.

Well, I’d better get back to my candy corn. Christmas will be here before you know it!

Smiles!
Diane

  1. What fun Diane!!! I am chuckling because I am in the midst of looking for the perfect Christmas gift for my class to make for their Parents. At least I know I am not the only one working ahead.

  2. Debbie, it’s funny that you should ask because an editor here asked me the exact same thing! I actually picked up a bag for her last night. I found the candy corn at a local grocery store. It’s made by Brach and is displayed along with their other bagged candies (on pegs). And it was very tasty!!

  3. I see I’m not the only one working on school stuff in June. I don’t feel so badly about it now. (Sometimes I feel like I should be taking a break, but I really never do.)

Thanks for letting us know that we can find candy corn at this time of the year. It seems like I’m always looking for an item for my class that’s out-of-season, and I never have any luck finding it. 😉

  4. Ok I feel so much better when I come to this site. It is almost 5 am and I am up going through my teacher books. Why? I am trying to get organized for the new school year when the last one ended just two weeks ago. I feel that if I don’t gather the ideas early then when the time comes I am nuts and stressed. I teach preK so I test everything before I take it to them to see if I can successfuly complete the task. The perk is candy corn in June or cupcakes anytime.

  5. I actually took 2 weeks off, did not think about school at all!!!!
Now, I am ready to think about getting ready for next year.
Interested in the math activity looking forward to hearing more.
Just recieved my Aug/Sept issue of Mailbox, good timing back to school will be here sooner than we expect.

  6. Hey readers! A couple of you have asked about the candy corn math activity. This activity will appear in the upcoming October/November 2010 issue of the Grade K Mailbox Magazine. I wish I could share the activity with you, however the managing editor has threatened to take away my chocolate if I do! 🙂
