Keyboard Crumbs!

No one has a keyboard this clean!

This upcoming Monday is “Crackers Over the Keyboard Day,” a very odd celebration that encourages us to munch crackers and cookies over our keyboards with gleeful abandon. But due to the state of my keyboard, I’m going to suggest something else. Let’s all shake out the collection of crumbs and then give our keyboards a quick cleaning instead. I took a moment to look up facts on keyboard cleanliness and found some horrifying information, which makes sense since we spend so much time touching our keyboards after touching door handles, drawers, and other germy surfaces. Did you know that…

  • Keyboards can have more germs than toilet seats.
  • It’s recommended that we clean our keyboards once a week. (I think I last cleaned mine in 2007.)
  • In addition to germs, keyboards collect crumbs, hair, skin cells, fingernails, lint, and orange dust from every cheese puff you’ve ever eaten.

Now apply this information to your classroom keyboards. We all encourage our students to wash their hands thoroughly after using the bathroom–but are they really thorough? Better clean those classroom keyboards as well…and you might want to wear a hazmat suit.

If you need more encouragement, check out this hilarious and completely disgusting Buzzfeed video in which you can observe what happens when Buzzfeed has their own workers shake out their keyboards.
