Getting Back On Track

Almost all of us have our days. What kind of days? Those days when no matter how well-prepared you feel going in, events seem to find a quick and unexpected way to unravel in your face like a rogue wave. Very few of us seem to escape these kinds of days.

Take yesterday, for example. A Monday. It seemed like I had my ducks in a row for this particular Monday. Then my oldest son pulled a paper from his school folder and announced that Monday was the scheduled makeup day for his one-mile race at school. “You promised you’d go,” he reminded me. He was right. From there, more of my life unraveled in ways both big and small. Only a friend’s cheerful text was enough to push me through my “wall of doom.”

As teachers, despite our best efforts, days can often unravel. A forgotten EpiPen on Peanut Butter Day, a last-minute visit from a parent wanting a grade explained, a classroom pet loose in the halls, and a student with a violently pronounced stomach virus are but a few examples.

What do you do to get things back on track? How have you helped colleagues get back on track? Got a funny story of a derailed day to share? That’s what our comments section is for. Let’s hear it!
