Food for Thought

I’m sitting at my desk, eating a salad, and wondering why a purchased salad always tastes so much better than one I bring from home. Come to think of it, almost everything I cook tastes better when someone else makes it! Hmmmm, I think I might be onto something—maybe there’s a cooking class in my future!

Every spring or summer I get the itch to try something new. Last year, I enrolled in a container gardening class. The class was fun, and when I completed it I had two container gardens to tend to. I liked that a lot! The year before, I showed up at a local hardware store where I learned the steps to build a patio using stone pavers. That project was a ton of work (pun intended!) but I now have a cute little patio with quite a bit of character (if you get my drift).

I haven’t made up my mind about what to try this summer. A friend of mine recently signed up for beginner golfing lessons. I almost did too; however, the fact that I don’t have golf clubs seemed problematic.

How about you? Is there something you want to try this summer?

Summer’s almost here!

  1. I started taking loom knitting classes last summer. Loved it and plan to continue that this summer. Hoping to finish that rug I started so I can put my classes handprints on it for our yearly auction.

  2. I would like to develop my photography skills and continue to work on my scrapbooks. Sadly this summer vacation doesn’t seem to be very long. But I will make the most of it!

  3. My husband and I are building a greenhouse this week. We have our garden started already. This year our garden takes up nearly a fourth of our actual plot of land that we live on. Our goal is to prolong the length of time that we get vegetables. My kids are not happy about helping out, but they do appreciate the fruit and vegetables.

  4. I also have dreams of learning something new. I recently purchased a Cricut machine. So far I have only used it to cut out letters and numbers for bulletin boards. I dream of making birthday cards, etc. for family and friends. A class in card making would be a good idea. I also have a part time job year round and there just doesn’t seem to be enough time. I plan to retire from the classroom after the 2010-2011 school year but hope to continue to work part time. I hope I’ll take time to learn something new. Making a patio sounds nice and I would really love to learn to speak Spanish as two of my grandchildren are bilingual. And if I would just take the time to use the skills I already have, I would be very busy. But as a teacher I know the value of learning new things.

  5. I’m very interested in American Sign Language. I know just a few signs, but was already able to assist a deaf customer in line in front of me at a department store return desk. She wanted to exchange something, and have it gift wrapped but the clerk wasn’t able to understand her. You never know when opportunities will pop up to make use of new knowledge!
