Flake Appreciation Day

Flake Appreciation Day is Monday, December 18! I’ll be honest–the name of this unofficial/official holiday gave me pause–and made me chuckle. What kind of flakes are we appreciating? Dandruff? Corn? The eccentric woman who asks her cat for dating advice? Using calendar clues, I’ve decided that the flakes we’re focusing on must be snow. So let’s celebrate Flake Appreciation Day with some engaging snowflake activities! Here are my favorites:

Aluminum foil gives this simple process art sparkle and shine!

Get youngsters moving with this groovy snowflake chant.

Classmates are the inspiration for these snowflake stories!

  1. In November we had our first snow fall, granted it was just some flurries, but my first graders were so excited to see the first flakes fall they could hardly contain themselves. What else could we do? We got dressed and went out to catch snowflakes on our tongues. I wondered what passersby would have thought but our school is off the beaten path but then, they are all 6 and what else do you do in the snow!
