Finding the Strength

It is in times like this that words seem insufficient. How does one come close to understanding the why of last Friday’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School? To put it simply, my heart hurts. And yet, although it seems unfathomable, we must find the strength to carry on. This week, as fallen students and staff are laid to rest, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones and I thank each of you for supporting your students and their families as they come to terms with this senseless tragedy.

With greatest sympathy,
Diane

  1. Coming back to our school today was so very difficult. We looked around our room at the special, holiday projects that we are doing this week, and imagined that those Conn. children were doing many of the same kinds of things when everything changed. Our parents are on edge, teachers are heartbroken and children are bewildered. Healing from this will take a long time, as we all try to find some way to explain it. We are trying to search for ways to make and keep our little ones safe when they come to our school. Is there really a way to do that? It is so sad to think that a child’s school may become a place of fear instead of a place of love, care and learning. I think we all, as a country, but especially as educators of troubled kids, must take a hard look at what is causing these kinds of tragedies to happen and make some changes. It won’t be easy.
