Finding the Funny

“Where are my glasses?”

“What am I working on?”

“Oops! That wasn’t supposed to happen!”

Welcome to my day! I misplace my reading glasses at least once a day. (Trust me, my colleagues will attest to this!) On most days I switch gears so many times that I lose track of what I’m doing. And honestly, not a day goes by without a major “Oops!” or several minor “Oopsies.” So, am I constantly feeling frustrated? No, I’m not. Instead I choose to be amused! In other words I have learned to laugh at myself.

So why am I blogging about this? Well, it’s National Humor Month, and I propose that we celebrate! I think we can all agree that laughter lowers stress. And let’s be honest: we each do something funny every single day. The key is finding the funny and celebrating it with a grin, a giggle, a chuckle, or a thigh-slapping, belly-busting laugh. I’m not suggesting that we take our responsibilities less seriously. And I’m most certainly not encouraging anyone to poke fun at others. That’s just not funny. I am simply challenging you to welcome humor into your day! I promise you that when you can laugh at yourself, your load becomes lighter. And who isn’t eager to carry a lighter load?

So with these thoughts in mind I’m inviting you, my blogger buddies, to share some of your silliness with us. To get you started, here’s one of my most recent funnies. I popped a doggie liver treat into my mouth thinking it was a peanut M&M. What a surprise! If only I’d found my glasses first…

  1. Hi,
I also sometimes misplace my glassess, Once I left them at a school was was subbing. I was half way home when I reliezed it so I turned around and went to that schoolo and went to the class and I found them then went home.

  2. Well, it seems the children in my preschool class get my humor but most adults don’t! They are always good for a laugh. I have two little boys in my class that are very best friends, because they are both named Luke! Well, Luke #1 was telling Luke #2, “you know you are my bery best friend” and Luke #2 answered very excitedly, “yeah, your my bestest friend too. (then he got really serious and said) Hey, did you forget to brush your teeth today, cause your breath smells” Luke #1 answered with a simple, “No” Then they went on about their play! It was hilarious to me that in such bliss, this frank honesty of “your breath smells” is just no big deal to two bery best friends! I laughed for hours!

  3. I love to keep them laughing!! We die laughing lately reading Junie B.. I teach First Graders and they sure do say the “darndest things”…
One day I was sitting in the middle of the room setting up the computer to the Active Board and I heard this at a table nearby… Apparently a sweet-quiet, little girl took a naughty boys eraser from his desk (either to borrow or just teasing him). Another student who sat across from her observed this “act of aggression” and blurted out, “That is one brave woman!” I almost feel off my stool.

  4. Oh but speaking of glasses, when I first started wearing them in my forties and could not read small print without them (which I blamed on the Publishers of Teacher’s manuals for making such small print) haha. I lost them so constantly and went crazy looking for them when sometimes they were on my head or clipped to my shirt that I finally switched to contacts. And have been happily ever after.

  5. After teaching 5th grade for 5 years I am now teaching 2nd grade (kind of a volun-told) and the kids say the cutest things. I too put things down and then can’t remember where I put them. One of my students wanted me to read her Olivia book during read aloud. I told here that I would be happy to read the story tomorrow so I would have an opportunity to read it first. I put the book down and didn’t think anything more. The next day when I went to look for the book she very matter-of-factly stood in the front of the room with her hands on her hips and said, “If I was my teacher where would I put a book?” Too cute. Our profession is stressful enough-we have to find the humor and fortunately it is not too far.

  6. The other day I was walking through the center where I teach kindergarten and a little girl it preschool looked at me very matter of factly and said “Miss Michelle you have ears like me!” Referring to my earrings I couldnt help but smile.

  7. Well, I was introduced to the terminology “crackin” by a 2 year old. As I was sitting in circle my shirt pulled up just a bit in the back and he saw that my pants were a little too low, he blurted “Ms Thelma’s crackin’, and to my surprise every little one knew the term and thought it was just hilarious, they were actually rolling in the floor. Now they check to see at times. There is nothing funnier than a child’s sense of humor.

  8. In our preschool class the girls were decked out in dress-up clothes and jewelry, and requested some music so they could dance. They chose partners and began to dance together, holding hands. One of the boys exclaimed, “Hey, I don’t have anybody to dance with!” I told him I would dance with him, to which he replied, “No, I don’t like old ladies!”

  9. I have a bad habbit of forgetting where I put things. One day one of my forgetful boys being very sweet, looked up and me and said “Miss H. I don’t want to get older because if my forgetting gets worse like yours is I’m terrified.” He was honestly scared of growing up because he thinks he forgets to much now. All I could do is smile at him and tell him to starting writing things down. Ever sense that day he carries around a mini-notebook.

  10. here are some remarks of my 4 yr.olds
1-when they are not criss cross applesauce” My legs are broken”
    2-My brains is asleep
3- But I brought you an apple.
4-but wait teacher, i like what you did to your eyes!

  11. I teach PreK. Two five year old boys were sitting together in morning circle and one of them has on a new pink polo shirt with green stripes. His friend says, “Nice shirt.” He repiles, “Thanks, my mom bought it for me.” Friend says, “Is she trying to make you adorable?” He replies and sighs, “Yeah.” Friend looks at me and smiles knowing he made a joke! lol, lol, lol I laughed until I cried!
