Dog Days

Go ahead. Shake your head! You’re scrambling to fit everything into your busy school week, and I’m talking about dogs. What’s up with that? Well, it is the first day of National Dog Week;dogs tend to be a popular topic among students; and doggone it, I’m a dog lover myself.

With the help of my pooch Lexie, I have some suggestions for incorporating dogs into this week’s lesson plans.

Literacy: Read a favorite dog story, have students dictate or write instructions for training a dog, investigate the –og word family, or challenge older students to sniff out idioms that contain the word dog.

Classroom management: Reward positive student behaviors by dropping dog bones into a clear plastic container. At the end of the week, count the bones and make plans to donate them to a local animal shelter.

Do you have a favorite activity that could be used during National Dog Week? If so, please share!

Give your pooch an extra hug!
Diane
