Constitution Day and Citizenship Day

Since 2004, the combined event of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day has been annually observed in the United States on September 17. I sure hope this combining of special days isn’t considered trendy. Personally, I’m unaware of a downside to having two single-day observations. But then again, I am a celebratory kind of gal!

In any event, Monday, September 17, will be here before we know it, and this day definitely deserves a double dose of recognition! So have you made your plans yet? Do you know whether you’ll be investigating the signing of the Constitution, the privilege of United States citizenship, or both? Please share! And be sure to check out the links below. You’re sure to find something to add to your celebration!

Hooray!

  1. Hello,

I wonder if this is a topic that gets more mileage with older students?

I’m planning to read parts of Jean Fritz’ Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution.

  2. As a 2nd grade teacher, I agree that this is a topic usually discussed in upper grades. However, I do intend to devote time to it during my social studies time. I will read some books, but mine(and my students’) favorite part is the preamble song from SchoolHouse Rock. I also use the topic to discuss the difference between a right and a privilege.
