My work desk is right next to a window that faces our backyard. I generally have a view of squirrels, birds, and the occasional neighbor—but the other day a very round groundhog waddled into view. I squealed like a fool and went to get my husband so we could stare out the sliding door at our visitor. Honestly, I think most of us view Groundhog Day as a silly holiday, but groundhogs are really stinking cute so I tend to enjoy the day, silly or no. I left some carrots for the chubby rodent just in case he comes back.
Before Groundhog Day (February 2), give each student a copy of this cute open page. Have each child research groundhogs and then write two facts and two opinions about these adorable animals.
