Catalog Conundrum

Here’s my dilemma: I can’t decide whether I still want to receive paper catalogs in the mail. If you’re a catalog shopper, you know it’s the start of the catalog season. Every day or two, I find a colorful catalog waiting for me in my household mailbox. It’s fun to sneak a peek inside the catalog as I enter the house. After that, anything goes. My intentions are to stack the stapled packs of pages for later looks.

Several years ago, I stopped ordering through the mail and by phone. Instead I began flagging my favorites in my catalog and ordering online. So why can’t I simply view my choices online? Maybe I can. Or maybe I still need my paper product. Have you given up catalog shopping?

Befuddled,
Diane

  1. I think the same thing sometimes. Yesterday though I had a few minutes before a school program began. I was sitting in my room and was able to look through a catalog and really think about what I needed in my classroom. I could flip through the pages quickly and make notes on the pages. Online I do not “browse” through catalogs, I usually have a purpose and just order what I need. The paper catalogs still hold their value for me. Also, I have been asked to order something and was able to quickly find what I wanted in a catalog and take it to my front office for the secretary to order. Online I would have had to think what was the name of the company, and their url. I dislike clutter, but need to keep my paper catalogs!

  2. Yes, I order online, but I like the paper catalog. When I go online to order I am there with a certain item in mind, no browsing through catalogs or looking for new ideas. It is also easier to share a find with a friend/co-worker if I have the paper catalog to show them rather then getting them to go to a website.

Sometimes I look at the ads I get through my email and sometimes I just delete them. However, I almost always find a time to look through a catalog; it may not be right away but at some point there will be a moment to flip through it.

  3. I like ordering online too, but I love looking through the paper catalogs. I was one of those kids who went through the toy catalog, circled everything I liked, and added it up to see how much all of it would cost. 🙂

The other reason I like getting so many things in the mail is because it keeps my dad in business. My dad is a mechanic for the post office, and they need all the help they can get 🙂

  4. I like receiving catalogs in the mail because I love spending time looking and thinking about the items I would love to order. After looking at them I use them when my preschoolers are learning to cut and paste.

  5. I like paper catalogs…ordering online is nice & convenient but I like browsing through the paper catalog. Tough part is choosing…many different companies & great items to choose from!

  6. I love catalogs! Not only do I get to dream about all of the wonderful things I want, but come time for birthdays or other special events I take the work out of shopping for my husband. We mark what we really need and then let the other go from there. That way we don’t spent extra money on things we don’t really need.

I also save all of my old catalogs for the kids in class to cut up.

  7. Perfect timing! I just got the mailbox catalog in the mail. I use a combo of catalog and online shopping. I still like catalogs-I have a tangible reminder of what I need to get. Then I make a list on the computer or online, and phone in the order. It works!
