A Slice of Carrot Cake

Henry-Huggins-BlogTomorrow, the beloved children’s author Beverly Cleary turns 100. A couple of weeks ago, I watched Ms. Cleary being interviewed by Jenna Bush Hager. At first I thought the interview was a rebroadcast of a conversation that had taken place several years ago. But no, it was a current interview with a woman who was days away from her 100th birthday! Ms. Cleary was cute as a button and quick to downplay the fuss being made over her upcoming birthday. Some of the fuss includes new editions of three of her most popular books—Henry Huggins; Ramona Quimby, Age 8; and The Mouse the Motorcycle—featuring introductions by Judy Blume, Amy Poehler, and Kate DiCamillo respectively. Very cool!

Ramona-BlogMs. Cleary, on the other hand, has something far more low-key in mind for her 100th birthday celebration. She’ll get up at 7:30 just like usual and spend her day reading the newspaper and books, maybe do a crossword puzzle, and watch a bit of television. Oh, and according to Ms. Cleary herself, there will be a celebratory slice of carrot cake too. When asked why, she quips, “Because I like it!” Love her!

Mouse-Motorcycle-BlogWhat’s your favorite Beverly Cleary book or character? I’m torn between Ramona and the motorcycle-riding mouse!

I think I’ll have a slice of carrot cake too!
