The Season of Sugar

Well, the season of sugar is upon us. It begins with Halloween (peanut butter cups, candy corn), continues through Thanksgiving Day (pumpkin pie), and powers full steam ahead through Christmas (cookies…so many cookies). A friend and I recently went on a low-sugar diet. I personally was addicted to Coke and a daily dose of Hershey’s Nuggets. I’m pretty proud of myself for giving those up cold turkey. But now I’m faced with store aisles filled with Halloween candy.

Do you know how to pick me out at a grocery store? I’m the one who is caressing the bags of mellowcreme pumpkins and then walking away with a stifled sob. I have decided that I’ll definitely treat myself on Halloween. Going a full year without a mellowcreme pumpkin is just silly.

All this thinking about sugar makes me wonder—do you have holiday parties in the classroom? And, if you do, do you serve sweet treats?

  1. At our school we celebrate all holidays. In the interest of health though we usually make a lunch food like Halloween it will be grilled cheese cut into the shape of a pumpkin. I do cookie decorating each child gets one. They perform for their parents a song or a rhyme.
Thanksgiving is a pizza feast. I provide the homemade crust and the families provide the toppings and all the kids make their own.
I allow sweets and love them myself but I do try hard to limit the kids at school.
