“Over the river and through the wood, to Grandfather’s house we go.” Those are the first two lines of the traditional Thanksgiving poem titled “The New-England Boy’s Song About Thanksgiving Day.” That was back in 1844. Over the years the poem was set to music. The title was changed. The destination became Grandmother’s house. Oh, and the holiday changed from Thanksgiving to Christmas! I should also mention that the original poem contained 12 verses. Imagine singing that!
Have a bit of fun with the provided sleigh pattern and this merry tune whether you’re sending students off for a November holiday or a winter break. Have each child color a copy of the sleigh and add a drawing of his or her family members riding inside. Set aside time for students to share their destinations with their classmates. Students who will not be traveling can accompany their pictures with the phrasing: Over the river and through the wood, to our happy home we go!
What are your Thanksgiving plans?
Sending thankful thoughts your way,
Diane
Thanks!
My husband and I are hosting and celebrating Thanksgiving at our home this year.
We are blessed to have 35 members of our large family coming over for Thanksgiving.
We enjoy cooking,so we’re preparing international dishes complete with appetizers, dessert and homemade bread. Again,we are truly blessed and thankful.
Thank you and have blessed Thanksgiving.
35 family members! My heart warms that you host such a wonderful gathering. Now, I’m wondering if you’d notice one more guest….hahaha. Enjoy!
Staying home.
Lol. Diane, there is always room for more guests… the more folks we have, the bigger our home seems to get. Lol.
