On the Other Hand…

It’s a new year, and I decided to let only a few days pass before I (sort of) contradict myself. I love eBooks, and you should too. Sure, I love paper. I can’t live without it. And, as I said Tuesday, despite owning a high-profile eReader, I still purchase mostly traditional paper books. However, when it comes to the books I purchase for professional reasons, I buy eBooks.

Life is a constant stream of subtly nuanced decisions and distinctions. In the classroom, however, the digital divide results in less nuance. Your students probably do not have their own individual digital eReaders. So your classroom library must comprise traditional paper books. However, you probably find yourself desperate for bookshelf and file cabinet space of your own, so professional eBooks just might be a great idea.

Cheaper. Easier to store. Portable. Easy to open and search. There are a lot of good reasons to use eBooks when it comes to professional titles and teacher resources. Have you switched to eBooks for personal or professional titles, or both? Are you thinking about it? Tell us by posting a comment.

  1. I have been using ebooks mostly for downloads from the public library. It means I don’t have to drive to the library to sign them out or return them, which is great when you are as busy as we all seem to be. Plus you can easily read them at night when It is dark and especially when riding in the car at night.

  2. I still prefer paper books. I have an ereader (given to me as a gift), but I don’t enjoy reading books on it.

As I stated in a previous post, my school doesn’t have much money and therefore doesn’t offer much in the way of ebooks for the students. What little we do have is for the 3rd and 4th graders.

When I need professional resources, I like to use my laptop or desktop.
