Wednesday, March 28 is Children’s Picture Book Day, and I thought it would be fun to do a totally subjective list of my top five picture book read alouds. When I say, “totally subjective,” I mean that I’m going to base this completely on which picture books were super fun to read aloud and brought complete delight to my students. Here are my top 5. I would love to see yours!
- A Visitor for Bear by Bonny Becker. This hilarious read aloud lends itself to dramatic flair.
2. Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina. “Tsz, tsz, tsz,” is so much fun to say!
3. The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone. This is still the most delightful example of a character interacting with the reader.
4. Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss. The build up to the burp is simply the best.
5. Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock by Eric A. Kimmel. KPOM! Animals fainting everywhere!
1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
2. Green Eggs & Ham
3 The Lorax
4. The Tiny Seed
5 A House for Hermit

My 2nd grade English language learners love Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson series of six books about a pet pig. Frank Asch’s bear books play with words and help to improve my students’ vocabulary. They love my silly accents with the Skippy Jon Jones books. Mem Fox and Margaret Wise Brown appeal to them as well.
Green Eggs and Ham, Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas,
The Day the Crayons …., The Big Hungry Bear and the Red Ripe Strawberry, Skippy Jon Jones books, Some seasonal Tommy De Paola
so many many more..
My class always loves the Bear books by Karma Wilson and anything by Jan Brett. We have recently discovered a love for Todd Parr as well after doing an author study. My students love his colorful illustrations. He also has a huge personality that comes through on his website. My students LOVED hearing HIM read his books when I played some of the videos of his read alouds.
