Mark your calendars, teachers! This Tuesday, December 13, is National Cocoa Day. How fun is that? Well, in all honesty, it may be too much fun for this time of year. (That’s the teacher in me talkin’.) However, here’s my idea: make plans to treat yourself to a tasty hot cocoa treat on this very special day! And here on the Blog, let’s share teaching ideas for a Hot-Cocoa Fun Day you can use whenever you like.
I’ll even get you started with a song that was published in the December/January 2007–2008 Preschool edition of The Mailbox magazine!

PS In case you haven’t yet written your letter to Santa, I’m going to let you in on a little secret! When I visited MyMailbox Gold and typed in “hot cocoa,” more than 30 different ideas popped up!
It is always fun to use hot cocoa to explain solids, liquids, and gases! Solid=cup, Liquid=hot chocolate, Gas=steam
We play a game in which we roll dice and the kids count the number of marshmallows they put into their hot chocolate.
I have done some interesting activities using cocoa as one of my materials.
– paintiing with hot cocoa (or cold)
– filling in the letter Cc outline with cocoa mix and marshamallows
– talk about how cocoa is processed and then share with the boys and girls some of the items made from it
– with or without marshmallow graphing
– tracing letters using cocoa (similar to using salt or sugar) on a cookie sheet
– measuring activties using cocoa
I am sure I could continue isting what could be done with cocoa all day but these are just a few….
