It will be here next week—February, that is! Quite frankly, February is rather full, isn’t it? There’s good ole Groundhog Day. (Note to Mr. Groundhog: there’s nothing scary about your shadow, big guy, so even if you do see it, please still stick around and let us have spring!) There’s Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day. This year, Chinese New Year is celebrated in February. Plus February is Black History Month. Zowie!
I know y’all are masters at weaving seasonal topics into your regular teaching topics, so I’m curious. Which teaching topics will you pair up with this February’s seasonal celebrations?
Thanks for sharing!
Diane
Dental Health month too. Valentines makes a great reason to do community helpers too like the postman and a heart doctor!!
Thanks, Angie, for mentioning Dental Health Month. I completely forgot that one!
I do Valentines and Friends, then I do “Being Healthy”
I include teeth/dentist, eating good/bad foods, and keeping germs away.
One of our February themes is Celebrations (2 weeks). I always include dental health activities in that theme.
February is also Heart Health Month, so we include lessons on how to keep our hearts going strong – exercise, eating the right foods, etc.
Our school is involved in something called “Mindcore”.
Each grade level receives a set of 100 questions to learn the answers to by February 25. Most questions are related to standards across the curriculum. It is a fundraiser for the school where students go home and ask parents and relatives to pledge $$ according to how many questions are answered correctly on “test day”. We have earned thousands of dollars. Money is used to purchase classroom and library materials. On test day, MANY chairs are lined up in our gym. Students enter the gym and are seated across from a volunteer from the community(parents and mayor), the state(our governor), former teachers, etc. The are asked their questions. It is amazing to see! Pledge sheets are taken home and $$ is collected. MANY students learn all 100 questions plus the 3 bonus questions. FUN!
We learning letter writing and will write Valentine letters to our parents.
We will spend time learning about caring and sharing with friends and family. I will also include heart health
We do a unit on Dental Health and also Famous Americans along with Presidents’ Day. The children pick a person and come dressed as them and why they are famous.
February: Groundhogs, shadows, silhouettes of my students; Chinese New Year, make dragon kites; Presidents’ Day, George Washington hats, Abe Lincoln log cabins with pretzels; Valentine’s Day; and Dental Health. Why is this the shortest month?
This month I will be doing Dental Health, Post Office, and Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is a good way to practice math skills with counting candy hearts and other candy.
I am doing the whole Health and Wellness set for Febuary
Started out with Dental Health, Washing away the germs, Heart Health, the food pyramid (making healthy food choices)
