It’s hot. Today the heat index was 99 degrees in North Carolina, and I know it’s been higher in other locations. Although many schools have air conditioning, it often isn’t very effective, making some rooms feel like the Arctic Circle and others like the tropics. When you combine extreme temperatures with a school dress code, things can get a little uncomfortable for students—and teachers!
I’ve taught in schools that didn’t allow tank tops or shorts, and the result was a bunch of very uncomfortable kindergartners in my classroom. My room was always particularly warm and fans just moved the hot air around. Talk to me about the dress code at your school–for both students and teachers. Is it reasonable? What would you change if you could?
