If you’re looking for an excuse to purchase a new pair of sunglasses, I’ve got you covered! June 27 is National Sunglasses Day, a perfect day to indulge in a new pair of shades. I’ll admit that at first a national day for sunglasses seems corny. But when you stop to think about it, protecting your eyes is no laughing matter. Sunglasses continue to be the most effective tool for preventing immediate and long-term eye damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. So rock those shades and get everyone around you rocking them too!
Speaking of rocking shades, summer is the perfect time to stock up on some inexpensive pairs of children’s sunglasses for the upcoming school year. Here are some ways to use them:
• Give each child a pair on the first day of school in anticipation of a bright school year.
• Have students rock the shades during an oral reading of Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses.
• Invite students to wear the shades as they write about their summer adventures.
What ideas do you have for incorporating sunglasses into learning activities?
Hoping to hear from you!
Diane
PS: Did you know that every 14 minutes an American loses, breaks, or sits on a pair of sunglasses? I have definitely contributed to this statistic. How about you?
Using sunglasses!!!! This is one of my favorite activities — let me explain!
I have 26 pairs of sunglasses from the dollar store. I wrote each letter of the alphabet on them (capital letter on right eye; lowercase on left). I used a silver pen to make the letters “pop” on the lenses. When I introduce a letter, I wear the glasses. When I’m doing a small group activity for the letter, I wear the glasses.
Another fun thing to do after having learned several different letters is to put the letter glasses in a bucket, pick a pair at random, put them on, and have the students give me a word that begins with the letter/sound. It’s a quick, easy review activity to do as the students are leaving or entering the classroom.
Thank you so much for sharing, Ruth! These are great ideas!!!
