The International Day of the Girl is coming up on October 11. I’ve put together a prize pack of books to inspire the girls in your classroom. Here’s what you can win:
- Girls Can Do Anything (Barron’s), a spirited romp through possibilities
- Brilliant Women Series (Barron’s), four books covering science, technology, sports, leaders, activists, artists, and designers
- Girl Squads: 20 Female Friendships That Changed History (Quirk), introducing many little-known power duos from pirates to revolutionaries to judges to musicians
- Girls Resist!, a guide to activism, leadership, and starting a revolution
Sound like a prize pack you need? Submit a comment to our blog by October 3, 2018, and let us know one woman (present day or from history) whom you would like to meet. One teacher will be randomly selected to win all of these books!
Here are some other can’t-miss events coming up this month:
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Get a free cybersafety toolkit with resources for you, students, and parents to stay safe online, prevent fraud, and fight crime. Download Stop/Think/Connect at dhs.gov/stopthinkconnect-toolkit.
October is also Bullying Prevention Month. Both Commonsense Education and PACER offer free resources. Get the Anti-Cyberbullying Toolkit with resources for grades K and up at commonsense.org/education/cyberbullying-toolkit; and then visit the Kids Against Bullying website, with checklists, videos, projects, and more, at pacerkidsagainstbullying.org.
It’s time to change the way girls think about technology and their role in STEM fields. TechGirlz holds free workshops including Techshopz in a Box, which have all the materials you need to run your own program. You’ll find step-by-step guides and much more. The materials are designed for middle school girls. Take a look at techgirlz/techshopz-in-a-box.

Definitely Oprah Winfrey. I think she is true inspiration to women and everyone. She is so positive and has accomplished so many things.

Emma Willard Hart. I read her biography and wrote a term paper on her for my Women’s History class. I love to dress up as her in March during Women’s History month. I greet my students at the door in costume and tell them I am Mrs. Susan’s friend who’s come to the present to tell the girls & Boys what it was like going to school when I was a child. The children love it. I hear them tell the next class wait till you see what our crazy teacher is doing in History Class today.
