Win This Book: “Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code”

“Dare and do”: That was the personal motto for computer coding pioneer and genius Grace Hopper. And it sounds like the perfect motto for your summer—and for your school year too!

Win a copy of this book about Grace by submitting a comment to my blog. Let me know, what will you “dare and do” this summer? Don’t be shy!

To enter our random drawing, send your comment by 11:59 pm EDT on July 18, 2017. One lucky teacher will win! Then check out these free resources to help your students learn to “dare and do” too:

Get a speedy start on coding with Swift, a free coding language that allows you to see what you’re creating as you work. Swift powers apps and was created by Apple. Download a free Learn to Code course, teacher guide, and more at apple.com/education/everyone-can-code.

Download a free kit to bring Family Code Night to your school. Parents and students work together to give coding a try. Get your kit at familycodenight.org.

Prefer a more guided approach to learning? Take a free online course to learn a popular coding language called Scratch. (Never heard of it? Bet your students have!) Then check out the many other free courses available from Alison. Start here: alison.com/course/Scratch-Teach-Programming-in-Schools.

Go ahead, give ‘em a try. Grace Hopper would be proud!

  1. I dare to clean out all of my teaching materials that I have stored away and purge the ones I am not currently using!

  2. I dare to finally look through all the stuff I already have so that I don’t make any more unnecessary purchases this year! I also dare myself to meet personal deadlines earlier than I am used to.

  3. I dare to get everything organized before school starts again- not just my classroom, but a new apartment as well.

  4. I dare to be organized next school year by starting NOW! It’s a monumental task at the moment since I inherited a teacher’s classroom items who has taught 44 years. (I’m not complaining-just saying, I need to get organized!

  5. I am daring to take dance lessons, take advantage of the arts in the city, and shake up my routine now that I am 50.

  6. I have taught science for 35 years. This summer I’m training at Purdue to teach engineering and robotics! A whole new challenge for me, I’m excited and scared at the same time.

  7. I am daring to take a leap of faith and add teaching social studies to my repertoire for the coming school year so I am spending my summer researching resources to engage my students!

  8. I am daring to make more use of technology in my first grade classroom! I will enjoy sharing this book with my students, as my husband is a software engineer and would love to have me promote learning to code!
