Whoopee for Winter! Win a Wintry Book

Tomorrow is the official beginning of winter. Do you welcome it with a “whoopee” or a “woe is me”? (I had one northern friend describe how she had to climb through her trunk to get into her car because all her door handles were frozen last week. I have a pretty good idea how she feels.) Here’s how I welcome it—with a steaming cup of tea and a chance for you to win a book perfect for the season!

Post a comment to this blog no later than 11:59 pm EST on January 8, 2017, to tell me which of the items below could help you engage your students. From the comments, I’ll randomly select one teacher to win Pigloo, a wintry tale of exploration, patience, and bravery.  (Update: congratulations to Katrina, who is the winner of our prize.)

When the temperatures dip, gather students around for a read-aloud of a good book. With the Novel Effect app, you can add theme music and sound effects in real time as you read popular books for preschool to grade 6. The app, which is free for a limited time, uses voice-activated companion audio. Click here to see how it works.

  1. Definitely the novel effect. I love to read to my kiddos and would love a new winter book but sometimes I would like to be read too as well

  2. I always welcome winter in with a “whoppee!!!” I love winter – I love the seasons changing. I like wearing warm, comfy sweaters and drinking coffee, hot cocoa, and tea …
My students would LOVE Pigloo …. what a great addition to our growing classroom library! I am also excited about the Novel Effect app …. can’t wait to try it out. Happy Winter!!

  3. Welcome winter! As a Southern gal, I usually don’t see much snow, but love it! I’d welcome any of the free resources, but think I’d love PigLoo!

  4. Pillow would be a great way to start the New Year with my Reading intervention kids. I look for engaging books to teach mini lessons. This could provide lots of lessons and the book would be love by k-2.

  5. To have a new book to share with my kinders, how wonderful. Pigloo looks like a neat story and I bet they would love it. Storytime is our favorite time of the day. Unwind, listen, dream and enjoy…. We would love this gift.

  6. Pigloo looks like a great book and would be awesome to have. Just starting out as a teacher and could use lots of books to keep adding to my collection.

  7. I’m happy w/ tea and a book but my students (k-5) are looking forward to snow, sledding and missing school. The illustrations in Pigloo look inviting and. Pigloo appears to be a friendly character. I would use this book as a starting point for a winter art activity. (I’m the school art teacher AND librarian–small school) Plus, I have a student who loves pigs–and we have very few books featuring pigs.

  8. I work in a non profit preschool in a intergraded class room. I am always looking at ways to get things for the class room we have a low budget. The money always is spent on the basics to run the class room . we love books

  9. The Paradigm Challenge peeked my interest. I will be gathering more information about this project. My pre-k students and I would love to have the Pigloo book.

  10. Novel Effect – I love the way it uses the print book. I connected a speaker for my classroom and the kids just absolutely loved it. Everyone sat still and payed attention through the entire story. They were mesmerized. Harold and the Purple Crayon was my favorite, but Polar Express and How the Grinch Stole Christmas were great for the holidays.
