What’s Coming Up? Dinosaurs!

I find that there are certain units in The Mailbox magazine that I look forward to working on more than others. For example, wouldn’t you find a unit on a grocery store theme to be more fun to write than a unit on phonological awareness? I do. So I find myself looking ahead at my magazine schedule to check out all these fun units I get to work on in the future. What’s my current favorite to be featured in an upcoming issue? Dinosaur centers! It doesn’t get much more fun than that! On a whim, I searched our website for dinosaur activities. I thought this poem was adorable, so I’ve included a link.

What fun activities do you do with a dinosaur theme?

  1. We make a diorama inside a shoe box during our dino unit. We paint the sides blue and green. We add a volcano, trees, plants, and dino eggs out of clay. Then on our Discovering Dino Night the parents along with their child mold a dino to place in the diorama. On that night we also have several centers set up, ( Ex. digging for fossils, dino puzzles, a center for dino rubbings, along with a dino café where we serve both the meat and plant eaters.) We conclude the program with the children singing dinosaur songs

  2. For my summer dinosaur camp I make a dinosaur egg.
Using 1 cup flour, 1 cup used coffee grounds dried, 1/2 cup salt, 1/4 sand, 3/4 water. Combine dry ingredients, slowly add the water until a dough forms. Form small balls of dough and using your finger make a hole add a toy dinosuar. Set in the sun to dry well. Turn stones often. When dry hide the dino eggs on the school grounds. Take the kiddos for a dino egg hunt. This is fun.
