Virtual or Off Site?

Have you taken your students on a virtual field trip? I took a virtual field trip last week and came away with mixed feelings. On the plus side, a lot of great information was shared. On the down side, the presentation was not especially engaging. In fact, it was a bit like a talk show with adults sharing information between themselves. I think a lot of kids would zone out during the chatter. My mind definitely wandered a bit!

I’m sure we can all agree that the purpose of a field trip is to provide students with unique learning opportunities that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. However, getting approval and funding for off-site field trips can be challenging.

What is your field trip status for the school year? Have you and your kiddos taken or have plans to take a virtual or an off-site field trip? Any tips to share?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

  1. I love off site field trips. This year we even went to a reptile zoo. It was very cool and yes the book reminded me of it. The issue we have is that a few parents complain about them. We go somewhere once a month. Our parents have to transport and attend. It is their choice whther to go so a few kids never attend anything. I also have in house trips that cost nothing.

  2. We had a field trip in February to a university theater production. In May, we will be visiting our county library. We are trying to encourage parents and students to utilize the library over the summer. 🙂

  3. We attend the local children’s theater once a year and do one other field trip. This year, I’m taking my class to Old McDebbie’s Farm. They’ll pet farm animals, ride ponies, explore the woods, and play the playground musical instruments.

  4. This year we enjoyed apple picking in the fall and a play in the spring. A special addition was the Metro Parks coming to talk about Winter Wildlife and the Credit Union coming to read to the kiddos about saving money and handing out banks!
