The Nose Knows

The last Saturday in April—that’s tomorrow—is National Sense of Smell Day. This may or may not be a day that interests you, however it piqued my interest for a couple of reasons. First, I wondered what your favorite smells might be, and we’ll get to that in a sec. It also reminded me of a funny story that I was told about my childhood. The story goes that my family was on a road trip. All of a sudden a horrendous smell filled the car, which was immediately blamed on little ole me, because I was in diapers. But wait—it wasn’t me at all! As soon as the car was stopped for an immediate diaper change, the folks realized that stinky smell was coming from a nearby paper mill. Pee-yew!!

Smell certainly has a way of triggering memories. I love the smell of fresh cut wood, perhaps because my dad was a logger. Fresh-baked cookies, oh yeah. I even like the smell of coffee and I don’t drink the stuff. Weird, huh?

Have you ever invited your students to talk about their favorite smells? This could be a fun conversation and also a discreet way to make kiddos more aware of this important sense.

So what are your favorite smells?

Do I smell chocolate?

  1. My students always talk about the food scents that drift from the cafeteria. They try to guess what will be served for lunch just by the smell. Sometimes they are right, and sometimes they are surprised.

My favorite scents? Anything related to fall: apple, pumpkin, cinnamon, etc.

  2. I love the smell of lemon. Leaves burning and cinnamon. What fun if you ask the kiddos to bring their favorite smell to school. I can imagine someone bringing in McDonald fries in

  3. There’s nothing in the world like puppy breath for the dog lovers of the world. Not one? How about freshly baked bread?
