Stand Up!

Every once in a while, I go on a binge reading articles about how sitting at a desk is killing me. Oh, I know that if you search the Internet, you’ll eventually find articles that say everything is killing you—from too much water to too many eggs to the metal levels in kale. But sitting too much—that’s a danger that makes sense to me. Because if I’m sitting, then I’m not moving. And we all know that movement is good for us. Apparently, if I spend a lot of time sitting at a desk, then I’m at an increased risk for obesity, heart disease, and cancer. (Cancer? I don’t even understand how that works as a consequence for sitting! But there it is. I’m doomed.)

If sitting is bad for adults, then we know it’s probably bad for children as well. As a result, some schools are moving toward standing desks. Check out this article on a school in California that has completely converted from traditional seating. Personally, I love the idea! But it certainly comes with a hefty price tag. And we all know that most schools don’t have a big, old money tree growing on the playground. (Ah, but wouldn’t that be nice? The visual makes me smile.)

Would you want your students to have standing desks? Why or why not?
