Quick Poll on Clean Off Your Desk Day

Welcome to Clean Off Your Desk Day 2014. In a previous life, my desk was not a very tidy area. It often had more in common with the Leaning Tower of Pisa than a so-called work surface. Yet, while it is not exactly spotless or clutter free in 2014, I’ve come a long way, baby.

Some of my neighbors here at The Mailbox, though, live at the other end of the clean-desk spectrum (the end known as the Cluttered-Desk End). I won’t name them. They know who they are as well as they know the dangers of a lit match and kerosene. Today is a day for them to embrace. Or be ashamed by?

So here’s a quick poll for you: On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being “the victim of an indoor cyclone” and 10 being “clean enough to allow for complex brain surgery without fear of contamination or infection”), how clean is your desk normally? Leave your answer in the comments.

  1. I have been much better in recent years. My desk averages a 7. At one time I had a student who was very neat. She would ask if she could organize my desk. I knew when she asked my desk had reached the point she couldn’t stand it.

  2. I’m at a 3. I’ve long believed in the old principal saying, if a teacher’s desk is cluttered, they’re spending their time teaching.
