New Year, New Transitions!

Well, 2019 is here! Whenever a new year rolls around, I think it’s nice to explore some new transitions to use in the classroom. It’s a fun way to hold your students’ interest and keep your classroom fresh and lively! Check out these fun classroom management options:

Eenie Meenie Miney Moe

This fun chant is perfect for a transition from one activity to another! Lead students in reciting the chant, guiding them to move to reflect the words.

Eenie meenie miney moe,
Touch your head
And touch your toe.
Like a flower, start to grow.
Eenie meenie miney moe!
Eenie meenie miney moe,
Stretch your arms
First high, then low.
Wiggle, wiggle
Nice and slow.
Eenie meenie miney moe!

“Sum” Lineup!

This no-prep idea is a skill-boosting transition activity. Simply have each student write on scrap paper a number from 5 to 10. Then say an addition problem whose sum is one of the numbers. After students solve the problem, give any youngsters who wrote the number a direction to follow in preparation for the next activity. For example, you might ask them to line up at the door or go to your group area. Continue with problems for each remaining number in random order. For an easier version, have students write a number from 2 to 5.
