National Ding-a-Ling Day

telephone-310544_1280I was a ding-a-ling this past Saturday. I locked myself out of my house—a really, really dumb move. But National Ding-a-ling Day, which occurs each year on December 12, isn’t to celebrate ding-a-lings like me. It’s a day to reach out and call or otherwise connect with people you haven’t heard from in a while. Now that’s a great idea! I have to admit, however, that I’m a bit puzzled by the name of this observance. Ding-a-ling? The day did originate in the mid 1970s when phones rang. So why not Ring-a-Ling Day? Maybe I’m continuing to be a ding-a-ling for not understanding!

Who will you reach out to today? A former classmate, colleague, or professor? A former neighbor or a parent of a past student? I do hope you follow through!

Merrily,

Diane
