Miss Babe Ruth

Today, August 26, is National Dog Day. So what does National Dog Day have to do with Babe Ruth? Has Babe Ruth gone to the dogs? Well, kind of—in Greensboro, North Carolina, anyway! Since today is a day for acknowledging the contributions of pooches everywhere, I’m introducing you to Miss Babe Ruth. For the past nine years, Miss Babe Ruth has served as a bat-and-ball dog for our local minor league baseball team, the Greensboro Grasshoppers. She has run the bases, retrieved bats, and delivered balls to the umpire—in her own special bucket of course—in more than 600 home games. She has greeted thousands of fans and been approached by thousands of children. Miss Babe Ruth, originally a solo act, has more recently been joined by her brother, Master Yogi Berra, and her niece, Miss Lou Lou Gehrig. Thank you, Miss Babe Ruth, for leaving Grasshopper fans in good paws when you retire at the end of the 2015 baseball season.

In celebration of National Dog Day, please take a moment today to give thought to family pooches, service dogs, and the hundreds of dogs in need of “furever” homes. What would life be like without dogs? I, for one, can’t even imagine.

Woof!

Diane

  1. My dog Bella is the best. She keeps me company and when I am sad she cheers me up. She is a bit off and that makes me laugh. She never wants to go in the car even to the park. It takes 2 to get her in and no matter where you go she has to be pushed out. Did I mention she barks all the way. Bella is my baby and she is simply the best.
