Let’s Talk Memorial Day

Memorial Day is this Monday, May 29th–and it’s a holiday that children tend to get mixed up with Veterans Day, Labor Day, Presidents’ Day, and The Fourth of July. I can see how it might be confusing! To keep things straight, here are some Memorial Day facts and some helpful worksheets.

  • The purpose of Memorial Day is to remember those who died in service to our country.
  • Memorial Day was originally called Decoration day because people decorated graves with wreaths and flowers.
  • The first Memorial Day is thought to have been observed on May 30, 1868. The ceremony at Arlington Cemetery commemorated those who had lost their lives during the Civil War.
  • Poppies are often given out and worn on Memorial Day as a sign of remembrance. Click here for the story behind the poppy.

We have lots of Memorial Day projects and worksheets. Click here for all of our options. Here are some of my favorites.
