Is It Snowing? Find Out—and Win

False alarm, no snow. But as the summer sun beats down, I thought it might be fun to share some cold-weather-themed, record-breaking feats from Record Breakers! More Than 500 Fantastic Feats from DK. Check these out and find out how you can win this book.

  • The USS Nautilus was the first watercraft to reach the North Pole, arriving on August 3, 1958.
  • The first people to see Antarctica were crew members on the Russian ship Vostok in January of 1820.
  • The first all-women team to reach the South Pole was the American Women’s Expedition led by Ann Bancroft. They arrived on January 14, 1993, after a 67-day trek.
  • The first person to be born on the Antarctic mainland was Argentina’s Emilio Marcos Palma, born in 1978.

  1. My favorite cold weather activity is sitting inside watching the falling snow and also watching the birds. I also love watching my dogs play in the snow.

  2. My favorite thing as a kid was sledding, now it is just walking as the snow is falling, before it is slippery. Now that I live in Arizona, I will have to travel to find falling snow.
