Hop on In

My kindergarten students visit the classroom a few days before school starts. At this, “Meet and Greet” parents and their children have a chance to find out where they will be for the year. I make sure each child receives a list of school supplies and a copy of page 1 from the Froggy and Me! booklet. I ask the child to complete the page and bring it back on the first day of school.

On the first day, we gather in the reading corner and I read aloud Froggy Goes to School by Jonathan London. I collect the pages and then, throughout the day, I invite groups of children to introduce themselves and share their drawings with the class. At the end of the day, I give each child a copy of booklet page 4 and have her draw something she remembers from her first day.

We complete each remaining booklet page throughout the first week. Then I give each child a copy of the cover to color. My assistant and I staple the pages together and then glue a photo of the child on the cover. The booklets are ready and waiting when parents arrive on Open House night!
