Amazing Rudolph

I always knew Rudolph was an amazing reindeer; however, not until today did I fully realize just how remarkable he is! Yes, Rudolph has a shiny red nose. And yes, Rudolph can fly at greased lightning speeds. Yet Rudolph has kept a teeny-tiny secret from us all these years. Rudolph’s other remarkable trait is contained in the facts below. Read on!

Reindeer Facts

Reindeer are herbivores. An average adult reindeer eats between nine and 18 pounds of vegetation a day.

Reindeer use their noses to sniff out danger, find food under the snow, and warm incoming cold air before it enters their lungs.

In the spring, reindeer form large herds that can include anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000 animals.

Both male and female reindeer grow antlers. Reindeer antlers fall off and grow back each year. Male reindeer shed their antlers during November. Female reindeer keep their antlers until their calves are born, around the month of May. (Clearly, Rudolph has year-round antlers! How cool is that?)

  1. what a great writing prompt! I think I will do this project with my children in 2nd grade. One of my colleagues had the children apply for the job of elf for Santa….what about the job of Rudolph for the sleigh………..!

  2. I am always looking for new and creative ideas for writing prompts for my students, especially around the holidays. This will be a great one to include facts, as well as sparking good conversation among the students, and a research project on reindeer. Oh the possibilities, so thank you!
