Have a Whale of a Time With Free Resources! Plus Win Two Books!

Looking for something to spark your students’ interest while addressing Common Core? What about a look at polar bears to inspire writing that’s bulletin board–worthy? Or how about the image of a whale breaching and grade-appropriate text about how we’re keeping whales safe?

Getting free Common Core–aligned activities like these and other timely animal-related holidays and events is easy. Just go to TheMailbox.com/ifaw to sign up to become an Animal Amabassador with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Not only is it free to sign up, but you’ll also be entered for a chance to win a $500 Amazon gift card!

IFAW has gone wild with some great resources. For winter, activities cover whale migration, bear facts, World Whale Day (February 14), and World Polar Bear Day (February 27). You can also find resources from fall, covering seals, habitats, cats, and more! Click here now to check it out!

I’ve got some more animal fun. Submit a comment to the blog by 11:59 pm EST Sunday, December 28, 2014, to tell me which of the resources from IFAW are your favorites. One lucky teacher will win both of these books! Safari: A Photicular Book, features animals that literally seem to move on the pages: the cheetah bounds, the elephant slaps its ears, and the lion charges. The text includes an essay about each animal as well as statistics. In Animal Stories: Heartwarming True Tales From the Animal Kingdom, author Jane Yolen and her family share 19 stories about the special relationship between animals and humans. Each story includes a sidebar with more information about the species; a map at the end of the book shows key location from the stories and a timeline of the animals through history. (Update: congratulations to Fran, who is the winner of our prize.)

  1. I love the theme days and that World Whale Day is also Valentine’s Day! I can totally make that work! I’ll also go back to fall for the habitat resources.
